Celebrate Shiraz Day at the Top South African Restaurant in London

Celebrating Shiraz Day Day

Happy Shiraz Day from all of us at Vivat Bacchus! As one of the best London restaurants offering South African cuisine and quite undoubtedly the largest South African wine collection in London, we’re excited  to shine a spotlight on this versatile and robust grape variety. Our London Bridge restaurant and Farringdon restaurant are the perfect spots to dive into the world of Shiraz and enjoy some of the best London eats and wines.

Shiraz vs. Syrah: What's the Difference?

Shiraz and Syrah are technically the same grape variety, but the term "Shiraz" is used to describe wines produced in New World regions like South Africa, Australia, and California. Shiraz wines are known for being fuller-bodied with higher alcohol content and concentrated fruity flavours such as black cherry and plum. You'll also notice a liquorice-like spice and the distinctive black pepper scent that sets Shiraz apart. Often aged in new oak, Shiraz wines develop vanilla and cinnamon notes, which tame the tannins and create a silkier texture.

Perfect Pairings for Shiraz

Given its bold character, Shiraz pairs excellently with grilled meats, making it a standout choice for summer BBQs. Whether you’re at our London Bridge steak restaurant or our Farringdon steak restaurant, you’ll find that our South African cuisine beautifully complements the rich flavours of Shiraz. The ideal serving temperature for Shiraz is between 16-19°C (60-66°F), allowing the spice and fruit complexity to shine without the alcohol becoming overpowering. However, it is a common misconception that red wines should be served at room temperature or warmer.

Yes, You Can Chill Red Wine!

While it’s a common misconception that red wines should be served at room temperature or warmer, some reds, including lighter Shiraz, can benefit from a slight chill. Chilling red wine elevates the fruit flavours, tightens the structure, and heightens the acidity, resulting in a refreshing and elegant finish. Light to medium-bodied reds with minimal oak, high acidity, and lower tannin structure, such as Beaujolais (aka Gamay), Pinot Noir, Trousseau, Nebbiolo, and Cabernet Franc, are best suited for chilling. However, avoid chilling full-bodied, tannic reds as they can become unpleasant when too cold.

In a nutshell, serve light, fruity reds at 12-13°C, medium-bodied reds at 15-16°C, and full-bodied reds at 16-18°C. A brief chill in the fridge is sufficient to enhance flavours without suppressing aromas.
