Cheese please: strange & spooky cheeses

22nd October 2018

Come and celebrate Halloween this month with a tasting of these five weird and wonderful cheeses matched with a great selection of five wines.

Valencay – discover the cheese that unleashed Napoleon’s anger
Originally shaped as a perfect pyramid, legend has it that when Napoleon returned to Valency castle after his unsuccessful expedition in Egypt, in a fit of rage he drew his sword and cut off the top; since then the cheese has always been made with a flattened top.

Munster – sounds like, and definitely smells like a huge monster!
A stinky but surprisingly mild tasting soft washed-rind cheese.

Snowdonian Red Devil – Red Leicester packed with a punch
A judicious hit of chilli is the perfect foil for the rich savouriness of the cheese.

Murgu – release your inner zombi and grab “The Brain” cheese
A lovely blue cheese, marbled inside resembling a brain! Smooth and melting on the palate, with intense and piquant flavours.

Brie de Meaux – it is said that it was King Louise XVI last wish to have a tasting of brie cheese.
